  • Modem
  • Modulates data and demodulates phone signals
  • Hub
  • Hubs are devices commonly used to connect segments of a LAN (Local Area Network). When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
  • Switch
  • A device for connecting multiple network devices and multiple segments. It connects devices together on a computer network by using packet switching to receive, process, and forward data to the destination device.
  • Router
  • a device that acts as a node on the Internet
  • Data Packets
  • When data is sent over the internet, it is split into smaller 'data packets' Not only is the data information sent but also instructions on how the receiving computer should put the packets back together.
  • Gateway
  • a device that connects networks of different underlying technologies
  • Network Interface Cards
  • Enables computers to be connected to a network. Includes the MAC Address - a unique identifier
  • IP Address
  • A 32 Bit number that identifies a device on a TCP/IP network e.g. 194.66.82.11
  • IPv4 address
  • A 32-bit, hierarchical address of a device on the Internet used in IP Addressing.
  • Internet
  • Internet is a network that accommodates several computers to facilitate exchange and transfer of data.
  • Intranet
  • A private data resource using the same technology as the internet such as browsers and protocols.
  • LAN
  • LAN is an acronym for Local Area Network that spans a small area, such as a school or a business. LANs are usually inside one building. They may have only a few computers or more but they are connected together by cable or WiFi (WLAN) and so can share resources and management.
  • WAN
  • WAN is an acronym for Wide Area Network. Such a network spans over an area larger than a LAN.
  • Authentication
  • Verification of a user's identity Authorisation: definition of a user's access rights to a system.
  • Virus
  • Virus is a program that is loaded onto your computer without you knowing about it and it runs to hinder the normal functioning of the computer.
